NEWS: Crime Down By 5.1%!
14/07/2006

Travel Midland Metro is an important part of the West Midlands Transport Network. There are 5 million passenger journeys made each year on Line 1 which operates between Birmingham Snow Hill and Wolverhampton St George’s.

The Metro is policed by officers from British Transport Police based at the Wednesbury Metro Centre and from Wolverhampton. All 23 tram stops have cctv cameras and a new cctv system is being fitted directly to trams, to further improve our customers safety. TMM is also part of the Travel West Midlands ‘Safer Travel’ initiative, aimed at making public transport safer for all users of trams and local TWM buses.

Travel Midland Metro is very pleased to announce that the number of crimes that have been committed in the first six months of the year on the tramway, is once again down as measured against the number of crimes over the same period in previous years.

Half Year No. of Crimes -/+ %
2006 111 -5.1%
2005 117 -37.4%
2004 187 +24.7%
2003 150 -18.9%
2002 185 -

Phil Bateman Corporate Affairs Director today said “This is nothing but good news for our customers. We have reached the half way point in the year. We are delighted to have even better figures than we achieved last year which were in themselves colossal!

Both our staff and the British Transport Police are very much aware of the need to continue to drive down crime on our trams. We already have a low crime, low incident system, and our customers should be very much encouraged by the results we have published today. We know that there is a huge responsibility upon us to deliver a good result in the second part of this year. But we are greatly encouraged by the good results we have achieved in the first six months of 2006.”
